How to Properly Prepare for Your Tattoo Session

A tattoo is a unique experience, but to ensure everything goes smoothly, it is essential to properly prepare both your body and mind. Here are some simple tips to approach your session under the best possible conditions.

Before the Session

  • Avoid Alcohol, Drugs, and Certain Medications
Consuming alcohol, drugs, or medications such as aspirin thins the blood, which can complicate the session and affect the quality of the tattoo. It is therefore recommended to avoid them for 24 to 48 hours before your appointment.

  • Get a Good Night’s Sleep and Eat a Proper Meal
A well-rested and nourished body responds better to pain. A good night’s sleep and a substantial meal before your session will help you manage the experience more comfortably.

  • Stay Hydrated (Inside and Out)
Drinking enough water in the days leading up to your appointment is important. Also, remember to moisturise your skin with a light cream or oil one to two weeks before the session, but avoid applying it on the day itself so as not to interfere with the inking.

  • Wear Suitable Clothing
Choose loose, comfortable clothing that is easy to remove or adjust depending on the area to be tattooed. This will make the session easier and prevent unnecessary friction.

  • Inform Your Tattoo Artist About Medical Conditions or Illness
If you are unwell, have symptoms (fever, cough, skin infection, etc.), or are undergoing medical treatment (such as antibiotics, anticoagulants, or dermatological treatments), it is essential to contact your tattoo artist beforehand. In some cases, the session may need to be postponed to ensure your safety and proper healing.

Good to Know for After the Session

Proper healing is essential for the quality of the final result:

  • Avoid pools, long baths, the sea, steam rooms, saunas, and intense exercise for at least 3 weeks after your tattoo.

  • Stay out of the sun and UV exposure for 1 month to protect your skin. Afterwards, use an SPF 50 sunscreen on the tattoo to preserve its colours and details over time.
